Happy Birthday w/chrysanthemums

I've always admired all the talented card makers that use pencils to color images stamped on kraft.  When I saw that Darnell of djkardkreations.com was having a challenge with an option for this technique, I thought I'd give it a try.  A requirement is to use NBUS (Never Before Used Schtfuff).  And who doesn't have not used crafty stuff?!!
You can find the details HERE.
I learned some things in the process of making this card.

  • Maybe I shouldn't have used such a detailed stamp on my first try of this technique.
  • It took a LONG time (at least it did me) to color this with pencils (3ish hours).
  • I think this "spotlight" coloring looks better on a white card.
  • Pay attention when adhering the image to the card base.  Yes, it is upside down.  I went with it.
  • I still struggle what to do with images that I have ready to go onto a card.  Layer/not layer; where should the sentiment go; what color should said sentiment be; embellish or not, blah, blah, blah.  So many decisions.  Maybe I'm too picky.

Anyway, it is done and I think it turned out okay.  I used (new to me) W Plus 9's Beautiful Bouquets: Mums and was colored with Prismacolor Premier pencils.  I have loved seeing others do this "spotlight style" stamping and coloring and was inspired by Therese Calvird's card (click HERE to see her beautiful card.)  The sentiment is from MFT's Beary Special Birthday.

Thanks so much for taking a look!

  1. This is beautiful Carol!! The spotlight coloring really stands out on the kraft and I think that using the kraft background gave it a very soft and rustic look. It would look wonderful on white card stock but I think I like this even more. I had to chuckle at the fact that you adhered the image upside down on your card base because I think most of us have done at a time or two. Either way, this is a winner!

  4. Where to start! First of all, I nearly choked on my pecans when you said the panel was adhered upside down. Karickey, if I only had a dollar for every time I've done that! I've been known to just cut the whole front at the fold, turn it around, and adhere it to another card base. A girl's gotta do ... right?! You did pick an elaborate image for coloring on pencils (way more ambitious than what I would do yet with my pencils), but I have to say, Carol, every minute of that time was worth it. You have a real natural talent for pencils! This image looks like it could have been watercolored with all the amazing shading and depth you achieved. It's not easy to do that!

And I love that you didn't color the whole panel. That right there leaves you with the perfect space for adhering a sediment, which you did brilliantly, so no over-thinking needed for this lovely design! Thank you so much for taking on the optional theme and for playing in my NBUS Challenge #8! Hugs, Darnell

  6. Wow! How beautiful! Amazing coloring! Until you said that you image was upside down...well, I never noticed! And Yes, I have done that! It took you 3 hours...It would have taken me double that (I'm a very slow card maker, and then it would never have turned out as amazing as yours!
